Fabio Capello has decided to omit two of his most experienced players for England's Euro 2012 clash with Montenegro on Friday.

The Italian has opted not to pick Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, while Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has not been risked following his recent return from a long-standing groin injury.

Ferdinand has suffered injury problems of his own this season but, after making a substitute appearance against Norwich on Saturday, the 32-year-old had hoped to be included.

In Ferdinand's place is 19-year-old United colleague Phil Jones, who is still awaiting his senior international debut, as is Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker.

Meanwhile, there is also a place for Red Devils striker Danny Welbeck, who has been in fine fettle following his recovery from hamstring complaint.

He will be joined in England's forward ranks by in-form Bobby Zamora, while there is also a spot in the squad for Liverpool's Andy Carroll, following his goal against Everton.

The Three Lions need only point against Montenegro to ensure automatic qualification for the European Championships, but Capello insists his side will be going all out to win the encounter.

"If you play for a draw it is a big mistake, you are defending a result and it is easy then to make silly or stupid mistakes," he told FATV.

"We need to go to win in Montenegro and not to play for a draw."

Brendan Rodgers' first competitive match in charge of Liverpool ended in victory after a 1-0 win against Gomel in their Europa League third qualifying round first leg tie at the Central Stadion in Belarus.

On the night Jamie Carragher reached 700 appeareances for Liverpool they would have like to have recorded a more convincing win - however Rodgers will settle for holding a narrow advantage having spent much of the game on the back foot.

Stewart Downing's 25-yard effort midway through the second half was enough to give the Reds the edge going into the second leg match at Anfield next Wednesday.

Downing's strike followed a period of dominance for the home side, with Sergei Kozeka rattling the post and Dmitry Platonov going close before the England winger struck.

Gomel dominated the majority of the game and the Merseysiders were lucky to leave with the win after the hosts missed plenty of chances in the second half. Liverpool's back four looked rocky throughout and it was poor finishing rather than the performance of goalkeeper Brad Jones which cost the home side.

Despite the positive result it wasn't all good news for Rodgers on his competitve debut as Joe Cole limped off injured after just 23 minutes.
